Myrina is the capital and main port of the island of Lemnos in the northeastern Aegean. The town is dominated by a Byzantine and later Genoese castle built on a rocky headland separating its two main beaches, with a harbourfront lined by cafés, tavernas, and the island's principal shops.
History
Myrina became the capital of Lemnos after the destruction of the earlier settlement at Poliochni around 1300 BC, taking its name from a queen of the island in Greek myth. Byzantine forces used Lemnos as a naval base and ship-repair station between the 7th and 11th centuries, and the fortified headland above the harbour, known through the medieval period as Kastro, passed through Genoese and Venetian hands before the Ottomans took the island in 1456-1479. The town was liberated on 8 October 1912 during the First Balkan War, after which the population exchange with Turkey reshaped its former Ottoman-era quarter, and Myrina became the administrative and ecclesiastical (Metropolitan seat) capital of Lemnos.
